However, the stock price of the parent typically adjusts downward after the spin-off to reflect the value of the business that has been separated out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What you end up with<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the spin-off you hold shares in one company. After the spin-off you hold shares in the parent company and additionally receive shares in the newly listed entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The combined value of both holdings should be roughly equivalent to what you held before though market perception of each company individually will determine how they trade going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Does the spin-off always benefit shareholders?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not immediately. The real benefit depends on whether the market values the two independent businesses higher than it did when they were together.
