This includes stocks that suddenly spike in price without any business reason, stocks with abnormally high trading volumes in a short period, or stocks where a small group of people appear to be artificially controlling the price.

In the stock market, price manipulation is more common than most people realise. A group of operators can quietly buy large quantities of a stock, create artificial demand, drive the price up, and then sell their holdings at a profit leaving ordinary investors stuck with overpriced shares.

This is why surveillance is important. It is the exchange’s way of catching manipulation early, before more investors get hurt. Without surveillance, there would be no check on stocks that are being artificially pushed up or down, and ordinary investors would have no way of knowing the risk they are walking into.

When a stock is placed under surveillance, it does not mean the company has shut down or that your investment is lost. It simply means the exchange has flagged it for closer monitoring and has introduced certain restrictions on how it can be traded, usually higher margins or limits on who can buy it.

[2881
