It is a debt instrument issued by the central or state government to borrow money from the public and institutional investors. When you buy a G-Sec, you are lending money to the government. In return, the government pays you fixed interest at regular intervals and returns the principal at maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>G-Secs are available in three main forms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Treasury Bills (T-Bills)<\/strong> &#8211; Short-term instruments with maturities of 91, 182, or 364 days. Issued at a discount and redeemed at face value.<\/li><li><strong>Dated Securities<\/strong> &#8211; Long-term bonds with maturities ranging from 5 to 40 years. Pay a fixed coupon every six months.<\/li><li><strong>State Development Loans (SDLs)<\/strong> &#8211; Bonds issued by state governments, similar to dated securities but at the state level.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>G-Secs are considered the safest investment in India because they are backed by the Government of India and there is virtually no default risk. Earlier, G-Secs were mostly accessible to banks and large institutions.
