Markets on a Rollercoaster: Nifty Swings as Tariff Drama Unfolds, RBI Steps In with a Rate cut!

The week began with a sharp 5% gap-down opening in the Nifty 50 index, marking one of the steepest gap-downs in the benchmark’s history. The sell-off was triggered by geopolitical tensions following the announcement of new tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump. This heightened uncertainty led to a sharp spike in market volatility, with the India VIX surging 66% to reach 23.19
However, sentiment improved after Trump later announced a 90-day pause on the proposed tariffs, leading to a recovery in the broader market. The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), in its meeting held on April 9, decided to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6%. The central bank also shifted its policy stance from 'neutral' to 'accommodative' to support economic growth.
Despite the initial volatility, the Nifty 50 ended the week nearly flat with a marginal decline of 0.33%. Similarly, the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 also closed on a flat note. Meanwhile, gold emerged as a safe-haven asset, rallying 6% during the week to hit a new all-time high
