Why Do Some Shareholders Not Receive Dividends?

Even if a company declares a dividend, not every shareholder automatically receives it. There are a few common reasons why the payment may not reach you.

You bought the shares on or after the ex-dividend date This is the most common reason. If you purchased the shares on or after the ex-dividend date, you won’t be on the shareholder register by the record date and therefore won’t be eligible for that dividend cycle.

Your bank account details are incorrect or outdated Dividends are transferred to the bank account linked to your DEMAT. If the account number, IFSC, or other details are wrong or the account is closed, the transfer will fail.

Your PAN is not updated with the registrar Companies use PAN to identify shareholders. If your PAN is missing or doesn’t match the registrar’s records, the dividend may be withheld.

Your DEMAT account has a freeze or hold If your account is frozen for any reason credits including dividends may not go through until the issue is resolved.

The dividend has gone unclaimed If a previous dividend wasn’t credited due to incorrect details and was never claimed, it may have moved to the IEPF (Investor Education and Protection Fund) after seven years. Reclaiming it from IEPF is possible but involves a formal process.

If you believe you’re eligible but haven’t received a dividend, check your bank and DEMAT details first. If everything looks correct, reach out to the company’s Registrar and Transfer Agent (RTA) with your DEMAT and PAN details.
