What Are Stock Market Timings?

Stock market timings in India vary depending on what you trade. Equity, commodities, and currency derivatives each have different hours. Here’s a complete breakdown.

Equity markets (NSE & BSE)

The regular trading session for stocks runs from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday. This applies to both NSE and BSE and covers equity shares, ETFs, and equity mutual fund units.

Equity derivatives (F&O)

Futures and options on equity indices and stocks trade during the same window 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM alongside the regular equity market.

Currency derivatives

Currency futures and options on NSE trade from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The earlier start compared to equities is because currency markets factor in global forex activity that begins before the domestic equity session opens.

Commodity markets (MCX)

For non-agri commodities like gold, silver, and crude oil, trading runs from 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM for approximately six months of the year, and 9:00 AM to 11:55 PM for the remaining six months.

The timing shift happens twice a year when international markets such as LME and COMEX adjust for daylight saving time. During those months, the Indian session extends by 25 minutes to stay aligned with global trading hours.

Market holidays

NSE and BSE publish a list of trading holidays at the start of every year. Markets remain closed on these days across all segments. You can check the current year’s holiday list on the NSE or BSE website.
