What is a Contract Note and Why is it Important?

A contract note is a legally binding document issued by your broker for every day on which trades are executed in your account. Samco issues it electronically this is called an ECN, or Electronic Contract Note.

It records every trade executed on that day along with all applicable charges – brokerage, STT, exchange transaction charges, GST, SEBI turnover charge, and stamp duty. This means it shows you not just what you traded, but exactly what you paid or received after all deductions.

It is important for two key reasons. First, it gives you a clear explanation of why your credited or debited amount differs from the traded price every charge is listed in one place. Second, it serves as legal proof of your trades, useful in case of any dispute or for calculating capital gains during ITR filing. You can download your contract notes anytime from Reports → Contract Note on Samco Star at star.samco.in
