Business Overview

Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) is a digital technology company operating across telecommunications, consumer digital services and enterprise technology solutions. Its business combines digital connectivity with applications, cloud services, connected devices and artificial intelligence (AI)-based offerings. Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL), its subsidiary, operates the core telecom business, providing mobile connectivity, 4G and 5G services, and fixed broadband through JioFiber and JioAirFiber. As of June 30, 2026, RJIL served 533.3 million customers in India.

JPL offers a broad portfolio of consumer services, including digital entertainment through JioTV+ and JioSaavn, cloud storage through JioAICloud, virtual computing through JioPC, and smart-home solutions. Its AI-related offerings include JioBrain and personalised digital services. For enterprise customers, the company provides connectivity solutions such as leased lines and virtual private networks, alongside Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, cloud and security services, managed network services and enterprise AI applications. These offerings provide opportunities to generate revenue from both individual consumers and businesses.

Technology development is a core part of JPL’s business model. The company has in-house capabilities across network infrastructure, software, operating systems, device engineering and digital applications. Its technology portfolio supports network management, service delivery and product development, while AI-based systems are used for network optimisation, fault prediction and automation. As of June 30, 2026, the company and its subsidiaries had filed 7,220 patent applications, of which 1,043 had been granted. The company also collaborates with external technology providers for certain cloud, content and AI services.

JPL’s connectivity infrastructure is supported by nationwide wireless coverage, fibre networks and distributed data centre infrastructure. As of June 30, 2026, its wireless broadband network covered over 99% of India’s population. The company also operated more than 100 edge nodes and had fibre connectivity at over 1,200 facilities. JioAirFiber had reached 14.0 million customers since its launch in September 2023, extending broadband services to locations where fibre connectivity may be difficult to deploy.

The company’s distribution network combines digital channels, including the MyJio app, with physical distribution points. Reliance Retail Limited serves as the sole distributor of RJIL’s prepaid connectivity services under long-term agreements and also supports marketing and customer acquisition. This relationship provides access to an established distribution network but creates dependence on a group entity for an important part of customer acquisition.

JPL’s business is positioned around its large connectivity base, integrated technology capabilities and expanding range of digital services. Its future growth will depend on retaining and monetising subscribers, expanding fixed broadband and enterprise services, and developing new AI-based offerings. Competition, technology investment requirements, dependence on external partners and reliance on group-level arrangements remain important considerations.

Key Strengths

  • Proprietary Technology Drives Cost Efficiency and Innovation

Jio Platforms has in-house engineering capabilities across network infrastructure, device engineering, software, operating systems and digital applications. As of June 30, 2026, its digital products and technology development team comprised 12,477 employees, representing approximately 45% of its total workforce. The company and its subsidiaries had filed 7,220 patent applications, of which 1,043 had been granted. Its technology portfolio includes 4G, 5G standalone architecture, fixed wireless access and AI-driven network automation through JioBrain. Ownership of key technology components can reduce third-party vendor dependence, improve cost efficiency and accelerate product development. These capabilities also create potential opportunities to monetise network platforms, managed services and enterprise technology solutions in overseas markets.

  • AI-Driven Operations Improve Execution Efficiency

Jio Platforms uses a decentralised operating model across Jio Centres and Jio Points to standardise processes and accelerate nationwide service deployment. Its proprietary AI platform, JioBrain, supports network capacity allocation, fault prediction and real-time optimisation, while digital twin technology helps plan network expansion and improve installation efficiency. For the three months ended June 30, 2026, 84% of service requests were handled through self-service or AI-assisted workflows, with most routine issues resolved in under three hours. The company also uses JioGridX to monitor network performance across 82 parameters and operates a centralised, round-the-clock Network Operations Centre supported by a separate disaster recovery site. These systems support faster issue resolution, operational scalability and service consistency.

  • Large Customer Base Enabling Cross-Selling and Digital Service Monetisation

Jio Platforms leverages its nationwide connectivity network and multi-channel distribution ecosystem to expand access to digital services and increase customer engagement. The MyJio app recorded 227.6 million average monthly active users in the three months ended June 30, 2026, serving as a platform for accessing connectivity, entertainment and other digital services. Bundling third-party offerings, including Google AI Pro and JioHotstar subscriptions, with connectivity plans creates opportunities for subscription and advertising revenue, while supporting customer retention and upgrades to higher-value plans. Its physical network of 1,059 Jio Centres and 6,322 Jio Points supports customer acquisition and service delivery. JioAirFiber had reached 14.0 million customers by June 30, 2026, expanding fixed broadband access and creating opportunities to cross-sell additional digital services.

Key Risks

  • Dependence on Telecom Licences and Spectrum Renewal

RJIL’s operations depend on maintaining its telecom licences and spectrum rights, which are subject to regulatory conditions and renewal requirements. Its unified telecom licence is due for renewal in October 2033, while most of its spectrum holdings expire between 2041 and 2042. Renewals, future spectrum auctions and compliance with network rollout obligations could require substantial capital expenditure. Regulatory changes, delays in spectrum auctions, unsuccessful bids or the imposition of additional conditions could increase costs and disrupt operations. Non-compliance with minimum rollout obligations may also result in penalties or spectrum withdrawal. In FY26, RJIL provided for potential liquidated damages of ₹10.6 crore following a delay in rollout obligations for the 26 GHz spectrum band, although the obligations were completed within the same fiscal year. Future licence or spectrum costs may also require additional financing.

  • Dependence on Reliance Retail for Prepaid Distribution

RJIL relies exclusively on Reliance Retail Limited (RRL) for the distribution of its prepaid connectivity services, customer acquisition, KYC verification, payment collection and related support. Prepaid connectivity contributed 77.08% of consolidated revenue from operations in FY26, making this arrangement critical to business continuity. Revenue from prepaid services represented 76.37% of revenue in Q1 FY27, compared with 77.88% in Q1 FY26. Any disruption to the distribution agreements could affect customer acquisition, recharge collections and revenue generation. Although alternative distributors are available, transitioning to a wider distribution network would require additional investment, time and operational resources. RJIL may also need to establish new supply-chain processes and train distributors to perform customer onboarding and payment collection, potentially increasing costs and affecting service delivery.

  • High Dependence on RJIL Concentrates Financial Performance

RJIL accounts for the majority of Jio Platforms consolidated financial performance, contributing 87.74% of revenue, 94.88% of EBITDA and 93.76% of PAT in FY26. For Q1 FY27, its contributions stood at 87.34%, 93.89% and 92.31%, respectively. This concentration means that any deterioration in RJIL’s performance due to competition, regulatory changes, technological disruption or other operational challenges could materially affect Jio Platforms consolidated financial results. Additionally, although Jio Platforms is positioned as a broader technology platform, its current key performance indicators primarily reflect RJIL’s connectivity business rather than the performance of its digital technology offerings. The company’s ability to monetise its proprietary technology and expand digital services could diversify its business profile over time, but this remains a key monitorable.

Conclusion

Jio Platforms has a strong position in India’s digital connectivity market, supported by its extensive network infrastructure, large customer base and integrated digital services. Its established telecom business generates strong profitability, while proprietary technology, expanding fixed broadband and enterprise solutions provide opportunities for future growth. The company’s technology capabilities and potential to monetise digital platforms beyond connectivity further support its long-term prospects. However, dependence on RJIL, spectrum-related expenditure, regulatory requirements and intense competition remain key risks. Overall, Jio Platforms offers exposure to India’s expanding digital economy, and we recommend subscribing to the IPO for listing gains.
