Stock market timings in India

The Indian stock exchange market is divided into three major subcategories. They are as follows:

Pre Opening time

The pre-opening sessions start at 9 AM and last till 9:15 AM. Orders, sales or purchases of any type of security can be carried out during this time only. Now the pre-opening time can be classified into three categories.
  • 9:00 AM to 9:08 AM
During this session, the orders for any transaction can be done. The orders are given preference based on the entry when the trading begins. One can cancel or change their orders as per the requirements during the session. In addition, no orders can be placed after this period during the pre-opening session.
  • 9:08 AM to 9:12 AM
This session in the Indian Share market determines the prices for the security. The price matching is carried out by corresponding supply and demand prices to ensure that adequate transactions are carried out among the investors who want to sell or purchase the security. The price determination at which the trading will initiate during the Indian stock market timing is done through a multilateral order matching system. One should note that the modification of any order which is already placed is not available during this session.
  • 9:12 AM to 9:15 AM
This session is considered a transition period between the normal Indian share market timing and pre opening time. No additional orders can be adjusted during this period and existing bids cannot be revoked as well.

Normal session

It is considered the primary Indian share market time which lasts from 9.15 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Transactions that are carried out during this time follows the order matching system where the price determination is completed through the supply and demand forces. Bilateral order matches are volatile and can induce fluctuations. To control the volatility the multi-order system was initiated for the pre-opening session and used in the Indian stock market.

Post-closing session

3:30 PM is considered as a stock market closing time in India. One should note that no exchange can take place in the market after this session. But the determination of the closing price can be performed during this time which has a significant role to play on the following day's opening security price.
