Equity markets recorded a strong performance over the week, with benchmark indices closing at record levels. The Nifty 50 advanced 1.1% to end the week at an all-time high of 26,328, while the Bank Nifty gained 1.93%, closing at 60,150. The Sensex rose 0.85% to settle at 85,762.
On the sectoral front, Nifty Metal and Nifty PSU Bank emerged as the top performers, posting gains of 5.7% and 4.9%, respectively. Most sectoral indices ended the week in positive territory, with the exception of Nifty IT and Nifty FMCG, which declined by 0.65% and 3.7%, respectively. The FMCG index was weighed down by weakness in tobacco stocks following taxation related developments with ITC a heavyweight constituent seeing notable pressure.
Global cues remained muted during the week due to New Year holidays. Brent crude prices traded above USD 60 per barrel, supported by geopolitical tensions involving the Middle East and the US - Venezuela region. The USD/INR depreciated 0.47%, ending the week above ?90 per dollar. In commodities, gold declined by around 3% to USD 4,395, while silver fell 6% to USD 74.4 per ounce.
