Indian equity markets witnessed a mixed and volatile week, ending largely under pressure amid sectoral divergence and heightened global uncertainty. Benchmark indices closed lower, with frontline indices such as the Nifty 50 and Sensex declining over the week, while selective pockets of strength were seen in PSU banks and auto stocks.
The IT sector was the key laggard, Indian IT stocks plunged this week due to global tech weakness, strong US jobs data delaying Fed rate cuts, and escalating fears of AI disruption to traditional outsourcing models.
On the positive side, PSU banks and auto stocks outperformed, supported by improving asset quality trends, stable credit growth outlook, and expectations of sustained domestic demand. Broader markets showed relative resilience, with microcaps and select small caps posting modest gains.
In the commodities space, gold and silver remained volatile amid geopolitical tensions. Gold prices declined by around 1% during the week, trading near ?1,54,000 per 10 grams, while silver fell nearly 1.5% to around ?2,46,000 per kilogram.
Overall, markets remained under pressure due to ongoing geopolitical risks, global macro uncertainty and cautious investor sentiment, keeping risk appetite subdued through the week.
