Yes, you can carry forward a futures position to the next day and even hold it until expiry if you choose to. Here is what you need to know.
How to carry forward a futures position
When placing your order, select NRML as the product type. NRML positions are not auto squared off at the end of the day and can be held until the contract’s expiry date.
If you have placed your position as MIS, it will be auto squared off at 3:15 PM on the same day. To avoid this, make sure you select NRML at the time of placing the order.
Does anything change when you carry forward?
When you carry a futures position overnight, a few things to keep in mind:
- The futures price may gap up or down the next morning based on global cues and overnight news.
- Your margin requirement may change the next day if market volatility increases.
- As the contract approaches expiry, you will need to either close the position or roll it over to the next month’s contract.
