The broader market remained under pressure this week, with most sectoral and market-cap indices ending in the red. Nifty Realty (-6.54%) and Nifty IT (-5.78%) witnessed the sharpest declines, reflecting heavy profit booking and weak sentiment. Benchmark indices Nifty 50 (-2.09%) and Sensex (-2.27%) also closed lower, while PSU Banks, FMCG, Auto, Midcaps, and Infra extended losses. The only pockets of resilience were Nifty Microcap 250 (+0.70%) and Nifty Pharma (+0.21%), indicating selective buying in defensive and niche segments. Overall, risk appetite weakened as investors rotated away from high-beta sectors amid broader market caution.
Gold remained largely flat this week, holding near ?1,52,000 per 10 grams, while silver slipped 1.65% to trade around ?2,33,000 per kg. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee depreciated nearly 1%, with USD/INR climbing above the 95.5 mark as a sharp 8.3% weekly surge in crude oil prices increased concerns over imported inflation. The combination of higher energy costs, a weaker rupee, and cautious global sentiment added to pressure on domestic markets during the week.
