Equity markets witnessed a sharp risk-off week, with benchmark indices correcting amid rising geopolitical tensions and surging crude prices. The Nifty 50 declined 5.3% to close at 23,151, while the BSE Sensex fell 5.52% to 74,563. Banking stocks bore the brunt of the sell-off, dragging the Nifty Bank down 6.97% to 53,757. Sectorally, Auto, PSU and defence stocks led the decline, while pharma and energy stocks showed relative resilience. The correction was largely triggered by crude oil climbing toward $100 per barrel and escalating tensions between the US and Iran, wiping out nearly ?20 lakh crore in market capitalisation during the week.
Pressure also spilled into the currency market, with the Indian rupee sliding to a record low of 92.47, reflecting concerns around inflation, growth and foreign capital flows. Meanwhile, gold and silver declined 1.5% and 1.9% respectively, as a stronger US dollar index and heightened volatility weighed on precious metals.
