Indian markets remained under pressure this week as Q4FY26 earnings season picked up pace, with investors closely tracking corporate performance and management commentary. Despite stock-specific action, broader sentiment stayed weak, dragging Nifty 50 down by 1.87% for the week.
Global cues played a major role in shaping sentiment. Brent crude surged back to the $100 mark, reigniting inflation concerns and raising fears of tighter macro conditions. Adding to the cautious outlook, JPMorgan downgraded Indian equities from “Overweight” to “Neutral”, citing elevated valuations and earnings risks, which further dented investor confidence.
Foreign flows remained a key overhang, with continued FPI selling weighing on markets. Meanwhile, safe-haven assets also saw correction, as gold and silver declined by ~2% and ~6% respectively, reflecting profit booking after recent gains.
On the sectoral front, divergence was sharp. Nifty IT witnessed a bloodbath, plunging 10.31%, largely due to weak earnings outlook and global demand concerns. In contrast, Nifty Energy outperformed, rising 2.63%, supported by higher crude prices.
Overall, the week highlighted a shift from earnings optimism to macro-driven caution, with volatility expected to persist in the near term.
