Indian equities remained under pressure during the first week of September, with the Nifty 50 declining 1.15% and the Sensex falling 0.97%, marking continued weakness despite a sharp recovery on the final trading day. The market witnessed a four-day losing streak as geopolitical concerns, elevated crude prices and global interest-rate uncertainty weighed on sentiment. The Nifty Midcap 100 also declined 1.55%, highlighting weakness beyond large caps.
Sectoral performance was broadly negative, with Nifty Auto emerging as the biggest laggard, falling 3.95%, followed by Capital Goods (-2.07%), FMCG (-1.97%), Pharma (-1.90%) and IT (-1.88%). In contrast, Nifty Energy gained 0.17%, while Smallcap 100 and Microcap 250 remained marginally positive.
Institutional flows continued to provide mixed signals. Brent crude rose above $95.50/bbl, reversing the favourable trend seen last week and raising concerns over India's import bill and inflation. Meanwhile, the rupee dropped from around ?95.36/$ to ?94.44/$. Going ahead, crude prices, FII flows, US yields, geopolitical developments and earnings momentum will remain key market drivers.
