Nifty Slips a Second Week, Sugar Stocks Surged High while Tech Fell

Indian equities ended a difficult week, with the Nifty 50 closing at 24,252, down 0.5%, while the Sensex slipped 0.6% to 77,541. It was the second weekly decline in a row. Costlier oil lifts India's import bill and revives inflation fears, while higher global bond yields further dented investor appetite for risk. Smallcaps still gained 1.2%.

Twelve of sixteen major sectors closed lower. Sugar counters stole the limelight, surging as much as 18% after the government tightened stockholding limits ahead of the festive season and global sugar prices touched a 14-month high. Elsewhere, the market regulator barred some of the foreign bank's broking arm over alleged trading violations, and the BSE won a place in FTSE Russell's indices.

Private banks were one of the strongest sector, up 1.3%, helped by fresh brokerage notes flagging a better earnings outlook for lenders. Technology was the weakest sector, sliding 2.6%. Indian software firms earn most of their revenue in America, so fears of stubborn US inflation dented their demand outlook.

Precious metals shone. MCX gold climbed past ?1.61 lakh per 10 grams and silver crossed ?2.46 lakh a kilo, both heading for a third straight weekly gain on a weaker dollar and safe-haven buying.
