The Nifty 50 declined 0.88% in the week ended September 25, 2026, reflecting heightened volatility and cautious investor sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex fell 0.54%, while broader markets underperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 declining 2.07% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 falling 0.81%. The market witnessed a sharp sell-off on September 24, when the Nifty dropped 1.64%, and the Sensex declined 1.67%, marking their steepest single-session fall in 10 weeks.
Sector performance remained mixed. Nifty Realty led gains at 2.98%, followed by Pharma (+1.10%) and FMCG (+1.04%). Microcap 250 (+0.35%) and Metal (+0.26%) also gained marginally. On the downside, IT (-2.40%) was the weakest sector, followed by Bank (-1.38%), Infra (-1.26%), Capital Goods (-1.17%), Energy (-0.88%), Auto (-0.59%) and PSU Bank (-0.28%).
Commodity markets remained a key concern, with Brent crude trading above $105/barrel, increasing concerns over India's import bill and inflation. Meanwhile, the US 10-year Treasury yield remained above 5.0%, adding pressure on global equity valuations. Geopolitical tensions, foreign selling and concerns around tighter global monetary conditions further weighed on sentiment.
