Settlement Holiday – What It Means for Your Trades

A settlement holiday is a day when the stock markets are open for trading, but the settlement of trades does not take place as per the standard T+1 cycle. This occurs when the depositories (NSDL and CDSL) or the clearing banks are closed on that day.

On a settlement holiday, trades executed on the preceding trading day will not be settled as scheduled. Instead, settlement is automatically carried forward to the next available trading day, resulting in a one-day delay in the crediting of shares to your Demat account.

How Settlement Holidays Affect Your Trades

Consider the following example, assuming 16th August 2026 is a settlement holiday on account of Parsi New Year:

  • No settlement will take place on 16th August 2026.
  • Trades scheduled for settlement on 16th August 2026 will be automatically rescheduled to the next trading day.
  • Profits earned from equity or derivatives trades on 14th August 2026 will not be available for trading or withdrawal on 16th August 2026.

Clients are advised to factor in settlement holidays when planning trades, fund withdrawals, or delivery-based transactions.
