Orders (Pre-market/Post-market and Order Types)
Order type definitions
Q. What is “Buy in Quantity”?
A. This is like a regular limit or market order where you choose the exact number of shares you want to buy. Fractional shares are not allowed in this order type.
Q. What are fractional shares?
A. Fractional shares are partial units of a US stock or ETF—meaning you can own less than 1 full share. They let you invest a specific dollar amount instead of buying whole shares, which can make higher-priced stocks more accessible. If you hold fractional shares, dividends (and similar corporate actions) are generally paid proportionally to the fraction you own.
For e.g., 1 share of a US stock costs $1,000, but you only want to invest $100. You can buy a fractional share of 0.10 shares ($100 ÷ $1,000). If the stock price rises to $1,200, your 0.10 shares become worth $120 (you earn the same percentage return as a full-share holder, just on a smaller amount).
If the company pays a dividend of $10 per share, you’d receive $1 in dividends for 0.10 shares ($10 ×
0.10).
You can buy fractional shares through the order type ‘Buy in amount’.
Q. What is “Buy in Amount”?
A. Here you can simply enter the amount (in USD) you want to invest in a particular stock / etf. The system will auto calculate the number of fractional shares to match the amount entered. The minimum amount accepted in this order type is $ 1 Please note, this will be sent as a market order and limit orders are not allowed.
Q. What is “Sell in Quantity”?
A. You sell a fixed number of shares you own. Both Limit and Market orders are allowed (subject to availability).
Q. What is “Sell in Amount”?
A. You sell shares worth a specified amount. Let’s say the market value of your holdings in Apple Inc is USD 10000. Then in ‘Sell in Amount’ order type, you can sell your holdings of say USD 5000. The system will auto calculate the fractional shares to be sold. Please note, this will be sent as a market order and limit orders are not allowed.
Q. Can I invest even if I don’t have enough money to buy whole shares?
A. Yes. Use “Buy in Amount” to invest XXX $ amount and buy fractional shares. For eg.1 share of a US stock costs $1,000, but you only want to invest $100. You can buy a fractional share of 0.10 shares ($100 ÷ $1,000).If the stock price rises to $1,200, your 0.10 shares become worth $120 (you earn the same percentage return as a full-share holder, just on a smaller amount).
Q. Why can’t I see the “SELL” button (CTA) for all stocks?
A. The SELL button is shown only for stocks that you currently hold in your portfolio.
Q. Why is my order not executing during pre-market or post-market hours?
A. You can place orders in Pre Market and Post Market like AMO orders in India. We will accept these orders in Pre Market and Post Market sessions, however they will be queued for execution and will be sent to the US exchanges at the opening of the core (regular) market hours.
Q. Why are order placements restricted during pre-market and post-market hours?
A. Pre-market and post-market sessions usually have lower liquidity and higher price volatility. So as a policy, trading is restricted during these sessions to minimize slippages and enable better risk management.
Q. Can an order placed during pre-market/post-market be cancelled?
A. Yes. You can cancel the order any time, as long as it has not been partially or fully executed.
Q.Why are market orders blocked for certain symbols?
A. Market orders may be blocked for certain stocks if liquidity is low or stock price is too high. For example Berkshire Hathway. This is to protect the orders from getting executed at any random price.
Q. What order types are allowed in GTT?

- Single order: Buy in amount, Buy in quantity, Sell in quantity (Sell in amount is not allowed).
- OCO (One Cancels the Other): Buy orders are restricted; Sell orders (Sell in quantity) are allowed.
